At The Hybrid Geek, we want to help you confidently understand what your hybrid vehicle is telling you. If you've received one of the trouble codes listed below, your vehicle is clearly indicating that the hybrid battery is failing and needs replacement. These codes are reliable indicators that your vehicle's battery pack is no longer performing within its expected range.
⚠️ P0A80 - Replace Hybrid Battery Pack
This is the most common and definitive trouble code for a failing hybrid battery. It means that the battery control system has identified poor performance, and it's no longer charging or discharging properly. If you see this code, your hybrid battery needs to be replaced soon.
Symptoms that may appear with this code:
-
Decrease in MPG
-
Red triangle or check engine light illuminated
-
Unusual engine behavior (engine running more often or for longer periods)
-
Fan blowing loudly in the back of the vehicle
🔎 P3000 with Subcodes (123, 125, 131, 132, 133, 144)
This is a general fault code issued by the hybrid control module. The subcodes provide additional details about the nature of the failure, such as communication errors or battery status inconsistencies. This code often appears in conjunction with P0A80.
If you see P3000 and one or more subcodes, it's a strong confirmation that the battery has degraded.
⚡️ P3011 to P3024 - Weak Battery Blocks
Each of these codes corresponds to a specific battery block within your hybrid battery pack:
-
P3011 = Block 1 Weak
-
P3012 = Block 2 Weak
-
...
-
P3024 = Block 14 Weak (varies depending on vehicle model)
Modern hybrid batteries are made up of multiple blocks (pairs of modules). These codes mean that one or more of those blocks are performing below acceptable thresholds. Replacing the full hybrid battery pack is recommended when any of these block-level codes appear.
📊 What This Means for You
If any of the codes listed in Group A show up on your scan, your hybrid battery is failing and will only worsen over time. Continuing to drive in this condition may lead to "limp mode" or reduced engine power. Fortunately, you're not alone—The Hybrid Geek is here to help!
